Teacher Dress Code: YAY! or nay?

Should teachers  be told what to wear at work? Depends who you ask, I guess.

Who knows. I say if you want to feel like a pro, act like a pro. And here's another "pro": People might treat you more like a professional if you act like you care about what you're doing. I guess that's a non-answer.

I'm no style expert, but here's what I like:
  • Tailored (or "modern" fit) dress shirts (avoids ballooning sleeves and waist)
Give the big knot a shot.
  • large-knotted ties--why not go for the windsor knot, even if you have a narrow collar? Give the big knot a shot. Throw in a dimple just below the knot, Rob Fukuzaki style
  • Check out the dimple on my tie, ladies and gentleman.
  • Tie should hit at the belt buckle--but I personally believe letting the tip of the tie hit just above the buckle is acceptable, but it takes some guts--it's flirting with disaster, yet not quite there. If the tip of the tie hits at belly button level, we have a situation.
It appears we have a situation.
An equally problematic "Situation."
  • Tie, belt, and shoes should usually coordinate.
  • School T-shirts can stay untucked on Fridays, but the dress shirts with a tie need to be tucked in. Unless you're Justin Bieber, or  part of the Jonas family. And we've already seen what happens when I match up against Justin Bieber.

Or I guess teachers can where whatever the heck they want. Who am I to say?

What do you think? Should teachers be told what to wear?

  4. Dear English Answer Man,
You haven't answered any questions lately, so I think I'll throw one in there just for fun:
What would be a good way to structure an essay for the SATs???
My English teacher told us to do four sections: intro, evidence, rebuttle, and conclusion. And for the intro he told us the have the thesis in the last sentence.
But, when I looked up SAT tips on Sparknotes they recommended a guerilla style -intro beginning with the thesis and each sentence that follows to be a sumary of what our body paragraphs will be about. It said use at least 3 examples to support position and have each example be a paragraph. This seems much easier but I feel like I should listen to my english teacher...seeing that he's an english teacher. What do you think?
ps. Sorry, I wasn't planning on asking such a lengthy question.

  5. Teachers should have a dress code like us students do. The school says they limit clothing options for less distractions... for example: if a woman teacher came to school with daisy dukes, a tight sleeveless shirt, and stilettos, that would be a distraction right? or if a guy teacher came in with basketball shorts and a t-shirt, another distraction. Also it would look unprofessional. Okay, okay, Fridays are an exception BUT still keep it KID FRIENDLY at school. Leave the inappropriate clothing at home and give off an example to students at school.

  6. Dear English Answer Man,
Yes I think it will be very well to have teacher dress code, if students need to wear dress code so do teachers. A lot of teachers -mostly women- wear a lot of dress code. Some students think that dress code isn't fair and that if students need it so do you guys.

  7. What do you mean by "teachers...wear a lot of dress code"? Do you mean that teachers wear clothing that would be against the dress code? If so, I can see how this could be problematic, and even call into question some of the rules. However, there is also a problem with directly comparing students and teachers, since their roles are so different.

  8. I agree with my classmate that ''if we have to have a dress code then so do teachers''. If teachers don't have a dress code then students wouldn't probably take them seriously. I also think it shows professionalism from the teachers when they dress appropriate. I believe in it works both ways if we have a dress code teachers should have a dress code.

  9. Yes teachers should have a dress code and follow them just like we do! When teachers get to break the so called "rules" it makes students want to be able to break dress code as well, therefore if the school wants to give dress code to the students then there should be a dress code for the teachers.

  11. I personally think teachers should wear dress close. Like dress shirts and dress pants belt and a tie. Becuase if they dress like this i think they will look highly respectable. They would also look more professional and that they care about there profession. This is how i think teachers shpuld dress.

  12. I absolutely agree on the teachers having dress code. Not only is it fair but teachers should come to school looking proper and professional. Also teachers and staff should have the same or around the same dress code or the other way around to make things equal. So dress code should definately be applied to teachers and staff as well as students.

  13. Proper and professional--well said. Nice comments people.

Friendly reminder: I know we all make mistakes occasionally, but be sure to check for spelling and punctuation--some of those sentences are looking a bit mangled.

  14. I agree. Teachers are suppose to be a good role model. To be a good example, they should have to follow the dress code, same as students. Students follow their teachers, so if a teacher wears tank tops, students will think it's unfair.

  15. I believe that this is true because teachers should look professional coming into work. I also agree that if students have to wear a certain items, then teachers do too. For example, I have once seen one teacher wearing a tank top and another wearing socks almost touching his shorts. I feel that they should look appropriate and maybe they can set examples

  16. Teachers should also have dress code. I believe that if children need to wear proper clothes so should teachers. If we have rules on what to wear so should teachers.

  17. I think that teachers should not be told what to wear. Most teacher are mature enough to wear appropriate clothing to work.Everyone wants to look professional so they can keep there job especially in hard times. The teachers that wear short skirts bandannas around there head should not be able to keep their job because they are obviously not mature enough to at least wear decant clothes to set examples for the students that they want to teach. Most students think it is unfair for teachers to be able to wear tank tops or high socks but they know what the limits are and are able to maintain it.That is why i think teachers should be able to wear what they want as log as they don't take advantage of it and wear inappropriate clothes such as tight mini skirts and pants that are obviously to big for them and it looks like they are trying to model their underwear for eveyone

  18. I personally think that they should have a dress code because it is a huge distraction. They should just wear a t-shirt and nice black pants.

  19. Teachers should not be told what to wear because they are old enough to made simple decisions on their own. But keep in mind that teachers have big influences on students and should be careful about what they chose to wear.
